Outdoor Swimmer Henley Swim Festival, incorporating the Henley Mile, is next Sunday…
Once more I’ll be looking forward to seeing a few of you! I’ll be there with artwork, hats, cards, camera and sketchbook, because not only will I have things to buy, I’ve also promised Outdoor Swimmer Magazine that I’ll do a drawing of the event afterwards. It always helps to tell someone – it means I’ll actually do it! So if you are there do come and see me…. and if you can’t find me for a while, my apologies in advance: At some point I shall have to go out and gather photographs and an impression of the swimmers for artwork later on, but I’ll be there all day.
For the full information on the event visit the Henley Swim website. Feeling tempted? it looks like you still have time to register for the event.
Some months back I entered a couple of paintings into Ilminster Arts Centre’s Open Exhibition, and was delighted to win the exhibition first prize. So I’m now also pleased also to be able to tell you that several of my swimmer paintings are back in the Arts Centre now – they are part of the Prizewinners Exhibition – an exhibition of work from the several artists who won prizes at the Open Exhibition. And it so happens that Ilminster Arts Centre is my favourite place to have an exhibition in anyway – it’s a large airy hall, with a cafe and excellent cake at one end of the gallery. All run by very lovely people, and a lot of them volunteers. Pop in if you are nearby – here are the details:
Prizewinners’ Exhibition: 2nd – 19th January
At: Ilminster Arts Centre at the Meeting House, East Street, Ilminster, Somerset, TA19 0AN
Gallery Open: Mon-Fri 9.30am-4.30pm; Sat 9.30am-2.30pm.
Admission Free. Please note the exhibition will close at 12noon on Sat 19 January
14th October – an evening of talks and films hosted by Ella Foote 4th to 14th October – exhibition of paintings by Nancy Farmer
I’m delighted to tell you that I’m taking part in a mini swimming & arts event at the Curzon Cinema, Clevedon. The main event will be on Sunday 14th, but my swimming paintings will be in the cinema from 4th October and you can see them during the opening hours of the cinema.
From the Curzon’s website:
“What is it about cold water swimming that attracts so many people? What draws folk to push their bodies beyond the extreme in pursuit of the elusive ‘ice mile’? How does one mentally and physically prepare for a feat as demanding as a solo English Channel swim?
“Celebrated local swimmers Steve Price and Alec Richardson tell tales of their epic swims alongside 4 breathtakingly beautiful films about cold water immersion. Johanna (dir. Ian Derry) tells the story of how cold water therapy for a sports injury lead Johanna Nordblad to free dive below layers of cold thick ice; the very charming Time and Tide (dirs. Isabelle Rose Povey & Josh Embury) depicts the drive that brings Clevedon’s hardy open water swimmers to plunge themselves into the cold, silty brine of the Severn Estuary – a daily activity which doesn’t let winter get in the way.”
Calendars & Clevedon Hats:
I’ll have a small table with things for sale during the actual event, including my new calendar for next year, and some newly re-printed Clevedon Pier hats (not currently available but they will be ready by then).
I’m pleased to be able to tell you that I’ve been offered a stand as part of the Serpentine Festival next month. I’ll have artwork on display, and a selection of prints and swimming hats to buy, and I’ll be there and very happy to talk to visitors. I’ll be in the marquee, but at some point I’ll make a quick break for the water’s edge too, as I plan to create a picture about the event for afterwards.
Come and see me if you’re attending! Any resulting artwork will appear here and on facebook whenever it’s ready. In the meantime, you can admire the posters, which are not my work, but they are rather classy. Designed to tell you about the benefits of open water swimming, as if we needed telling…
If you want to take part in any of the swims, Entries are still open, but there are only spaces left in the one mile swim so be quick! https://www.swimserpentine.co.uk/
Nearly packed and ready to take everything over to Bath Art Fair this weekend… it just remains for me to stuff everything into the car and make a poster that says ‘Yes! I do commissions, I can paint you!’ … or some such.
Bath Art Fair is NOT in Bath, it’s between Bath and Frome, so you don’t have to battle into town and struggle to find parking. It’s near Farleigh Farm Shop, Norton St Philip, BA2 7NG – there will be a large marquee in a field. There will also be a lot of other artists’ work, a pop-up cafe and a free children’s quiz… and I will have new swimmer paintings which you haven’t seen because I have been hoarding them over the last few months.
The fair is open from 10am – 6pm Saturday, 10am – 5pm Sunday. £5 entry on the door but look out for two-for-one fliers which will be at the farm shop nearby and have been distributed here and there locally.
Starting to get stuff ready for Bath Art Fair in less than a fortnight’s time now. These are some more of my ‘mini swimmers’ series – they are only 4 inches square, in watercolour and (mostly) gold leaf.
Come and see me! It’s 12th – 13th May, between Bath and Frome. My work there will be all swimmer paintings, and appropriately it’s only about 8 miles from Vobster, so you could fit in a swim too…
Fellow swimmers: they have some leaflets in the shop at Vobster Quay that will get you in on a two for one (usually £5 entry for one). I also have more leaflets – Clevedon Swimmers I’ll see if I can leave some in The Salthouse. https://www.bathartfair.co.uk/
The Outdoor Swimmer Show is organised by Outdoor Swimmer (previously known as H2Open Magazine) and combines an outdoor swimming expo with a chance to get in the water to test the latest kit or just to enjoy a casual swim. Try on a wet suit or book a swimming holiday and be inspired by our great speakers and guest coaches.
More information about the Show can be found here.
The Outdoor Swimmer Show takes place alongside the Henley Mile and is free to attend. Henley Mile swimmers, their families and supporters are automatically registered. If you are not taking part in one of the Henley Mile swims but would still like to come along to the show, please register here: http://henleyswim.com/events/henley-mile/.
