“Spinnaker Pants”

Chris was on time, which was a shame because Hilary was more than usually late, and I was even later… though by mere seconds. She didn’t see me pull into the car park as she fairly fled down to the lake to avert a prompt swim being achieved by Chris. (His swim hat was on beneath dryrobe hood, one boot was loosened… not a moment too soon).

It was, however, not a day for dithering: storm-force winds whipped the lake into pointy peaks that were as geometrically interesting as they were uninviting.

Jim cheerfully assured us that it was just as horrible in there as it looked.

Rita arrived (though she had pre-faffed and sent photographic evidence, to the bemusement of her husband). There was general agreement that the best place to be this morning was in the pub, and that the only way to get there quickly was to get in the lake, and out, as soon as possible. This being the natural logic of swimmers.

Even Hilary agreed, in principle. But she was still remarkably dry-looking after we returned from a brief but decent excursion round the nearest buoy and the Blue Thing.

Dressing was interesting. With careful orientation of pants downwind it was entirely possible to fly them like a spinnaker and thereby get a leg into the hole on the second or maybe third attempt. Paying attention to the task, I still heard a heartfelt and loudly proclaimed “Eeeyeurgh!” which was Hilary, getting in.

Seconds later she was back.

The pub beckoned.

The original entry in my very occasional and sporadic swim diary…..
